The top 10 family dynasties in Canadian politics

Here our Yahoo! Canada News’ top ten political families:

1) The Mackenzies:

Prior to Confederation, William Lyon MacKenzie served as the first mayor of Toronto,Upper Canada.

Post-Confederation, his grandson William Lyon Mackenzie King served as Canada’s 10th prime minister with three different stints in office from 1921 to 1948.  King remains Canada’s longest running prime minister with 7,824 days in office.

2) The Trudeaus:

Pierre Trudeau served as Canada’s prime minister from 1968 to 1984 (with a short break when Joe Clark was PM) and is known as the father of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

His son Justin has been a federal MP since 2008 and just announced his intentions to seek the Liberal party leadership.

3) The Martins:

According to CBC News, Paul Martin senior was Liberal cabinet minister for four different prime ministers.  He ran for the Liberal leadership twice but was thwarted in his attempts.

His son, Paul Martin, replaced Jean Chretien as Liberal leader in 2003 and served as prime minister until 2006.

4) The Laytons:

The late Jack Layton served as the NDP leader from 2003 and 2011 and, in the 2011, election took the party to new heights by becoming the country’s official opposition.

Layton’s father, Robert, was a Mulroney-era cabinet minister;Layton’s wife Olivia Chow is currently a NDP MP; and Jack’s son Michael is a City Councillor inToronto.

5) The Mannings:

Ernest Manning served as Alberta’s premier from 1943 to 1968 and is Alberta’s longest serving premier andCanada’s second longest serving premier.

His son, Preston Manning, was the founder and leader of the Reform Party and served as a member of Parliament from 1993 to 2002.

6) The Petersons:

David Peterson served as Premier of Ontario from 1985 to 1990.

His brother Jim served in the Chretien cabinet and a third brother, Tim, used to be a member of the legislative assembly.

Peterson’s sister-in-law, Deb Mathews is currentlyOntario’s Minister of Health.

7) The Bennetts:

The Bennetts ruledBritish Columbiafor the better part of four decades.

W.A.C. Bennett was premier from 1952 to 1972 and remains the longest serving premier in the province’s history.

His son, Bill Bennett, wasBritish Columbia’s premier from 1975 to 1986.

8) The McGunitys:

Dalton McGuinty is the current premier ofOntario.

His brother David is a MP for the federal Liberals and their father, Dalton McGuinty Senior, was a MPP for the riding of Ottawa South from 1987 to 1990.

In May, the McGuintys expanded their political family ties whenDalton’s son became engaged to the sister ofPrince Edward Island premier Robert Ghiz.

9) The Mackays:

Elmer MacKay served in the Brian Mulroney cabinet — under various portfolios — from 1984 to 1993.

His son, Peter MacKay, has been an MP since 1997, and now serves as Stephen Harper’s Minister of Defence.

10) The Fords:

Rob Ford has been on Toronto’s city council since 2000 and was elected Mayor in 2010.  His brother Doug Ford, is currently a city councillor while their father, Doug Ford senior, was a MPP for the Progressive Conservative party from 1995 to 1999.
