Shakespeare and Chaucer can easily be named as the “most famous” and the best of the English poets; but, for each period of English literary history, there are still shining stars among the more mundane wordsmiths. Dozens of great English poets easily come to mind, but their poems cannot compare to the poetry of Shakespeare or Chaucer, either in form, originality, or historical impact.

Shakespeare’s sonnets and even the poetry used within his plays are simply the finest examples of English literature ever known.
